When you are abroad, you are able to be the same person as though you are still at home. They recommend the tourist to wear something they used to wear at home and do not attract attention by their appearance.
If you are not sure in the social situation of this country, avoid the unlit streets, crowded places, subways, markets, festival places and similar areas. Of course, these tips are subjective as any tourist is going to visit the sightseeing, but be careful there. For example, do not bring all the money with you; do not react to other people who want to attract your attention in a very noisy or disturbing way. One of the robbery schemes is practiced on the streets when a strange person claims that he lost his wallet and wants you to check yours. A foreigner gets out his wallet and shows a stranger. He takes it, checks and returns with the words "No, it is not mine. I am so sorry. Good luck!". As a result, later a foreigner discovers loss of money. This trick is meant for sincere, open and naïve people. So, do not be too open, especially to the helpful local people, especially if they wish to assist you for too big fee. As for taxi, it is better to get the marked cabs, rather than unknown companies' services.
Also it would be great to know some phrases in the local language or write down some questions and statements on the sheet of paper. If you take part in the public arguments, demonstrations and discussions, do not be surprised if you find some troubles with that.
